RESIDENT VOLUNTEERING THRIVES AT CHESTNUT SQUARE

Senior citizens account for one of the largest volunteering groups in the United States, and it might be for good reason.

Aside from the altruistic act of helping someone in need, the volunteers themselves experience countless physical and mental benefits. From promoting mobility and fitness, improving mental acuity, to fostering a sense of achievement and purpose, volunteering is a win-win situation for all involved.

Such is the case at Chestnut Square at The Glen, where many residents take part in a wide variety of volunteering opportunities.

The community's Resident Council is active with local senior centers, congregations, food banks and charitable organizations, just to name a few.

Residents and staff have also formed an outreach group called the "Sunshiners," whose goal is to spread joy to people suffering through illness, injury, or the loss of a loved one. Dick and Bev Boyer, Chestnut residents since 2003, perhaps said it best: "Our lives and happiness have been measured by what we've shared with others."
