Teacher and Former Student Reunite After 20 Years

When Simon Dymanus joined the maintenance team at Chestnut Square at The Glen, he never imagined he’d be reunited with someone who played a pivotal role in his life two decades earlier. But fate has a way of working its magic—and in this case, it brought him face-to-face with Karen Newman, his former ESL teacher from Maine East High School.

Simon arrived in the United States from Poland in 2004, just as he was beginning high school. With limited English skills and a new culture to navigate, he found a great mentor in Karen, known then as “Ms. Newman,” who taught ESL and math at Maine East for 15 years. “Simon was friendly and polite to everyone he encountered,” Karen recalls. “He was also a very respectful student and made an impression on me as a quick learner.”

After graduating, Simon spent many years self-employed in the maintenance and construction industries before joining the Chestnut Square team in 2025. One day, while walking down a hallway in the community, he spotted a familiar face and exclaimed, “Ms. Newman!”

Karen turned around, surprised and delighted. “It was such a joyful moment,” she says. “Simon is the same pleasant and thoughtful man he was when I first met him, and he does a wonderful job at Chestnut Square. It makes me proud to see a former student being such a good person who enjoys helping people.”

Simon shares that sentiment. “I’ve always loved fixing things, and being able to brighten the day of our residents makes me happy,” he says. “Reconnecting with Ms. Newman after 20 years was totally unexpected, and I’m pleased to see that she’s doing so well in the community.”

Karen’s journey to Chestnut Square began in Seoul, South Korea, where she was born into a family that valued education—her father a musician and orchestra conductor, her mother a physician turned high school principal. Karen herself worked in various roles in the education field in South Korea before moving to the United States. She lived in Buffalo Grove, Palatine, and Prospect Heights before deciding it was time for a new chapter.

After hearing positive feedback from a friend, Karen toured Chestnut Square and immediately felt at ease. In March 2024, she moved into a 1-BR floor plan with a lovely view of the community’s planter garden. “I was quickly accepted and felt right at home,” she says. “I’ve made many new friends, and I’m honored to be a resident here.”

Karen has rekindled her enthusiasm for art at the community’s watercolor classes, which she attends regularly. “Watercolor painting is very rewarding,” she says. “It’s a peaceful and expressive outlet that I look forward to.” She also enjoys the on-site concerts, discussion groups, and camaraderie of shared meals. “The dining program is a perfect balance,” she says. “I have everything I need in my apartment, but I love the convenience and social aspect of dining with my neighbors.”

Karen and Simon’s story is a beautiful reminder of how life can come full circle—and how Chestnut Square continues to be a place where meaningful connections flourish.

Chestnut Square's Wii Bowling Video Receives 32 Million Views!

When selecting a retirement community, seniors often cite the ability to maintain an active lifestyle as the most important factor in their decision. That’s why at Chestnut Square at The Glen, our residents love our extensive calendar of programs and events... including Wii Sports!

During a recent gathering of our Wii Bowling Club in our theater room, we filmed a short video of resident Royce M. rolling a strike and receiving enthusiastic cheers from everyone in the room. After we shared the video on Chestnut Square’s Instagram page, it quickly struck a chord with the public and has already received 32 million views!

ESPN also re-posted the video on their social media channels, and various online influencers have shared the video as well.

The comments have been overwhelmingly positive with sentiments such as "Gramps has still got it!” “This looks like so much fun," "This is so wholesome," "Sign me up!” and “This is what I want my retirement to look like.”

Royce and his wife, Nancy, have certainly appreciated the outpouring of support, unexpected as it may be. “We get a kick reading all the comments,” Royce says. “Some of the people think I’m a lifelong bowler, but the truth is, I rarely played until we moved to Chestnut Square and we discovered their Wii Bowling Club. Now Nancy and I look forward to it every week.”

Jamie Wolfe, Chestnut Square’s Director of Life Enrichment, shared her thoughts about the viral nature of the video. “I think people are drawn to it because our residents are so authentic and friendly,” she explains. “Their happiness is genuine—and regardless of the event, everyone in our community really enjoys being together, trying new things, and sharing a laugh. Resident Shares Her Personal Connection to Jackie Robinson Day

In honor of Jackie Robinson Day—when all MLB players wear the number 42—Chestnut Square resident Connie Fendley is displaying her amazing collection of Brooklyn Dodgers memorabilia in our community’s showcase!

“I grew up in Westfield, NJ, and at that time, you were either a Dodgers fan or a Yankees fan,” Connie explains. “I was drawn to the Dodgers because of Jackie Robinson, and even though I was only eight when Branch Rickey signed him to the club, I was influenced by how Jackie endured and how the team rallied around him.”

Connie vividly remembers going to her first baseball game at Ebbets Field and marveling at the green grass since she had only watched baseball on black and white TV until then. “From the late 1940s to mid-1950s, the Dodgers and Yankees faced each other a lot in the World Series, and the Yankees seemed to always win,” she recalls. “But finally in 1955, the Dodgers won...and Jackie got his championship. Baseball was my greatest joy, and I loved going to the games with my dad, taking photos, and scorekeeping.”

Even though Connie was devastated when the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1957, she still cherishes all her wonderful memories of the team in Brooklyn. “I’ll never forget meeting Jackie Robinson after he retired when he was a guest speaker at my church,” she says. “It makes me very happy that Major League Baseball honors him with a special day every April.”

Highlights from Our Surprise Baby Shower at Chestnut Square!

Chestnut Square at The Glen was thrilled to host a surprise baby shower for our remarkable Dining Services Manager, Lana Manojlovic. Currently eight months pregnant, Lana is about to welcome a new baby boy!

Residents and staff couldn’t wait to share their excitement as they presented Lana with a beautiful display of gifts. The event also included some baby-themed games, delicious cake, and fun opportunities to pass around the microphone and share personal parenting advice with the expectant mother. Among the many heartfelt comments, here were just a few:

Lilly C. offered this emotional message. “Hold him from the first day that you have him, because they grow up so fast.”

Kathy C., remembering her own sleepless nights as a mother, shared some practical advice. “Do not sleep in the same room as the baby since you’ll be too focused on every single sound that they make. Whenever the baby needs you during the night, he will be sure to let you know.”

Elizabeth A., having seen friends and family navigate the role of technology in their children’s lives, revealed a big smile as she recommended, “When your son starts asking to have a cell phone, the answer is no until YOU decide.”

This uplifting gathering—illuminating the close bonds shared in the community between residents and staff—made a lasting impression on Lana, who will soon be taking a maternity leave before returning to her position at Chestnut Square.

“Thank you so much for sharing this special day with me,” Lana told the crowd as she held back tears. “I will never forget the incredible generosity and kindness you’ve shown me. And I can't wait to introduce the new baby to all of you.”

Community Hosts Bingo Fundraiser with Chicago Bears

Chestnut Square at The Glen, an independent senior living community in Glenview, IL, was honored to host a special Bingo Night fundraiser with the Chicago Bears front office in memory of Katie Nagle, the community’s beloved Bingo caller. An executive assistant at Halas Hall for 22 years, Katie also had a deep connection to Chestnut Square that started when her mother, Marge, was a resident. After Marge’s passing, Katie continued to visit Chestnut Square to keep in touch with her mother’s friends and to call the popular Bingo games.

“Katie was one of the sweetest souls you could ever meet,” shared Vera Lampe, CEO of Chestnut Square’s parent company Bethany Methodist Corporation. “When she passed away in 2024 after a long illness, we wanted to remember her selfless legacy and celebrate her life. That’s why we decided to host a special event that raised funds for Bears Care, the charitable arm of the Chicago Bears which supports disadvantaged children and families in the Chicago area.”

In attendance were Chestnut Square’s residents and staff, the Nagle family, George and Barb McCaskey, and numerous members of the Bears front office.

"Everybody loved Katie, and she was friends with everyone at Halas Hall,” said George McCaskey. “She was one of those rare people that whenever you came into contact with her, you always had a better day."

The fundraiser was held on January 30 and featured various Bingo games including a winning card that spelled the letter “N” in honor of Nagle, Katie’s last name. Prizes were generously provided by the Bears organization.

Katie’s sister, Joan Cramer, was especially touched by the program and offered this heartfelt message on behalf of the entire Nagle family. “Katie had a gift of bringing people together, and her kindness and genuine interest in people's lives set her apart,” Joan explained. “Her Bears family knew about her friends at Chestnut Square and vice versa. Bringing these two groups together for an evening of ‘Bears Bingo for Katie’ was a testament to how Katie is still spreading joy. Her kindness continues to flow through people.”

A Musical Love Story Arrives at Chestnut Square

For Allan and Marilyn TeRonde, music has been a shared joy in their 61-year marriage—from their first meeting as students at Carroll College in Waukesha, WI, to their recent move to Chestnut Square at The Glen.

“Growing up, my mother loved to sing and music was always in our house,” Allan recalls. “I started playing the piano at age seven...and I still play today.” Earning a B.S. in Music Education, he started his career teaching elementary and junior high school music, before transitioning to H.R. management at American Grinding and Machine in Chicago—where he would eventually become President.

Marilyn, who earned her B.S. in Nursing, worked in the medical-surgical field before becoming a full-time mom. She shared Allan’s love for music, and together, they sang for decades in numerous church choirs as they raised two loving daughters. Allan also enjoyed singing in the Northbrook Barbershop Chorus, and most recently, with the Glenview Senior Center’s Starlite Singers.

“When we started researching retirement communities, we weren’t sure what to expect since we had lived in the same house in Northbrook for 54 years,” Marilyn chuckles. “But as soon as we visited Chestnut Square, we fell in love with the community.”

The TeRondes were also able to customize their new 2-BR floor plan with various finishes, including the exact same yellow paint color they had in their home. “Right after we moved in this summer, our grandkids visited to see the new place,” Allan says. “Their faces lit up as they told us, ‘Your apartment looks and feels just like the house!’”

Since becoming residents, Allan has joined the community’s Treblemakers singing group and continues to play the piano at various events. And while Marilyn no longer sings, she loves attending all of the on-site concerts and guest lectures, and recently joined the fiction book club, too. “Every person we’ve encountered here—residents and staff alike—has welcomed us with open arms,” she says. “We’ve made so many new friends already...we’re thrilled that we found Chestnut Square.”

At any age, moving into a new home is an experience that’s usually filled with excitement—and also a fair amount of nerves. What will my new neighbors be like? How long will it take to get settled in? Will I make new friends?

With more than two decades of experience, Chestnut Square understands this well and that’s why we place such an emphasis on making sure every new resident receives a comprehensive welcome from the community.

Each year, Chestnut Square elects six resident floor representatives to serve as ambassadors of the community, with each covering a different section of the building. "When new residents move in, they receive a tray of freshly baked cookies from the Chestnut Square kitchen, as well as a personal visit from their floor ambassador,” explains Lori P., Chair of the Floor Reps Committee. “We’re here to answer their questions, invite them to join us for lunch or dinner, and introduce them to all the wonderful people in the community. This isn't just on the day they move in...we enjoy staying in regular contact."

Chestnut Square also hosts lively floor mixers where residents can get to know their fellow neighbors better. Passing around the microphone is a highlight at these gatherings as residents introduce themselves and share interesting or funny stories based on prompted questions from cards placed on the table.

“Every person we’ve encountered—residents and staff alike—has greeted us with open arms,” says Allan and Marilyn T., who moved to Chestnut Square in July. “Thanks to Lori, our floor ambassador Connie, and various other neighbors, we’ve already made a bunch of new friends. And we’re attending a lot of great programs and events each week. When you live in the same house for 54 years and then move, you never quite know what to expect. A Pet-Friendly Community that Delivers Countless Smiles

Who doesn’t love Buttons? A small, brown, and stylish Yorkie, Buttons attracts attention wherever he goes, according to his owner and resident Vince P.

“Buttons has become an unofficial ambassador of Chestnut Square due to his popularity,” Vince explains. “People of all ages love greeting him, especially during our regular walks on the campus and throughout The Glen.”

Buttons is just one of many adorable four-legged friends who calls Chestnut Square their home. “I love that my Labradoodle, Daisy, is able to live with me in the community,” says resident Mary Ann C. “We have lots of space in our apartment.”

Juanita S. shared her thoughts as well. “My cat, Baby Girl, always ends up in my lap when I’m home. She’s a very affectionate soul.”

Health Benefits

The companionship and love provided by a furry friend can foster a sense of purpose. Plus, studies have shown that pet ownership can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and even decrease the risk of heart disease. Caring for a pet also encourages physical activity and routine, as older adults engage in activities like walking, playing, and feeding, all of which promote better physical health and mental stimulation.

That being said, it’s essential for seniors to consider factors like their lifestyle, health, and ability to care for an animal before making the decision to bring one into their home.

Celebrating Oktoberfest in Style at Chestnut Square

"Prost" from Chestnut Square at The Glen! Getting into the spirit of autumn, our residents and staff gathered for a lively Oktoberfest mixer that included festive music, freshly made Bavarian pretzels, pastry-wrapped Wiener schnitzel, German bratwurst, and assorted beverages.

"I was born and raised in Germany, so I couldn't resist wearing my dirndl outfit to the party," said resident Elisabeth T., pictured above left. "Believe it or not, I never attended an Oktoberfest until I got married and moved to the United States. Now, I look forward to it every year, and it's wonderful how Chestnut Square puts together such a great party for the occasion."

Jamie Wolfe, Director of Life Enrichment, shared her thoughts as well. "Themed events at Chestnut Square are one of the many reasons why this community is special," she explains. "Our team loves being able to provide memorable experiences like this for our residents. It's rewarding when we see so many smiling faces!"

Resident Shares Artistic Passion at Chestnut Square

Sylvia Hollman’s lifelong journey as an artist began in elementary school, where she first discovered her love for painting while growing up on Chicago’s north side. “I caught the art bug early,” she says with a smile. “And much to my delight, that passion has only grown over the years.”

As Sylvia raised a loving family with her husband, Sidney, she worked in the administrative offices of various healthcare facilities—including 25 years at Lutheran General Hospital.

“No matter how busy life got, I made sure I could include my artistic pursuits. I’ve enjoyed working in oils, watercolor, pastels, colored pencils, and even mixed media collages.”

Not one to rest on her laurels, Sylvia continued her artistic education at Oakton Community College, and later, at the Chicago Botanic Garden for nine years studying under instructor Marlene Hill Donnelly.

At the age of 62, shortly after the passing of her beloved husband, Sylvia embarked on a new academic adventure, earning a Bachelor’s degree from DePaul University and a Master’s degree from Loyola University, each in Liberal Arts. “It’s something I always dreamed of doing, and learning alongside my fellow classmates was a lot of fun.”

When Sylvia began to research senior living options, one of her prerequisites was that the community offered a vibrant lifestyle and a diverse calendar of programs and events—with plenty of opportunities for creative expression.

“Chestnut Square checked all the boxes,” she recalls. “I moved in two years ago and I absolutely love it here. The new friendships, the book clubs, the fitness classes, and especially the watercolor classes. There’s always something new you can learn, and after 80-plus years, I think I’m finally ready to start doing portraits.”

Wisdom from Chestnut Square's Poet Laureate Bill L.

Anyone can be a poet, says Chestnut Square resident Bill L. And he should know—he spent his career as a fundraiser for various nonprofits but in his free time wrote poetry and more than 30 plays that were produced in the theater. On top of that, he volunteered for years at local prisons teaching poetry classes to inmates.

Bill is the enthusiastic leader of our community’s Poetry Club—a group that he founded a few years ago which is now a regular event in Chestnut Square's monthly program calendar. “Open to everyone, it’s a welcoming environment where we read the works of famous authors, and then we each share a recent poem that we’ve written ourselves,” Bill explains. “The discussions are always invigorating.”

Residents are encouraged to focus their compositions on any topic they’d like, and if someone happens to be stuck, Bill offers encouragement and the following sage advice. “Poetry is about making sense of the world around us,” he says. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re writing about love, grief, nature, the mystery of existence, or any other topic. The key is to let yourself relax, ignore your self-doubts, and I promise the words will find you.”

Inspiration for a poem can come from many places, Bill says. The important thing is to keep an open mind. “Our discussions allow people to uncover new ideas without even realizing it at first,” he continues. “When we read and analyze the works of others, it lights a spark and gives us a new perception of the world.”

Vicki B., a regular attendee of the Poetry Club, loves the gatherings. “One day, we might spend half an hour analyzing the various meanings behind one line within a poem, and each person brings a fresh perspective. The magic of poetry is that it can be direct and ambiguous all at the same time, as long as there is an underlying truth.”

If you’re struggling with writer’s block, Bill recommends focusing on an emotional memory. “Close your eyes and think back to a time when you experienced a profound emotion—good or bad—and write down as many details from that memory as possible. Sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures. Eventually, you’ll find the starting point of a poem staring right back at you.”

A Summer to Remember at Chestnut Square

Summer is always a magical time at our senior living community, and these past few months did not disappoint. Our annual outdoor concert series, hosted in our beautiful gazebo courtyard, featured lively musical performances as residents, families and friends enjoyed champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. Check out five more of our favorite memories from this summer:

1. To celebrate the arrival of the Paris Olympics, we gathered for a special happy hour featuring festive drinks and appetizers from around the world...with our very own opening ceremony led by CEO Vera Lampe.

2. We held our first-ever community mixer for the pets of Chestnut Square, as residents and staff enjoyed a delightful afternoon on our patio with their four-legged friends.

3. Resident Elliott Rosenberg was honored by the Chicago Cubs and received a standing ovation in front of 35,000 fans for his decorated service piloting a B-24 Liberator over Europe during World War II. To make the occasion even more special, Elliott’s wife, Alice, and much of his extended family joined him at the game.

4. Our wonderful staff were treated to expanded wellness initiatives with an employee appreciation picnic, on-site chair massages, and a fun Zumba class in our Great Room.

5. Chestnut Square's Banana Split Ice Cream Bar, featuring a full lineup of toppings to choose from, was a delicious way to beat the heat while enjoying some great company!

The Power of "Yes"

Not too long ago, a movie was released that centered on two parents saying “yes” to whatever their kids asked (with a few limits). The movie showed how relationships improved by this positive “yes” energy.

“We can easily find a lot of reasons to say ‘no’ and to project ‘no’ energy. You probably can identify people who do this…if not, that person might be you!” says Melanie Myatt, Chestnut Square’s Chaplain. “The problem is that ‘no’ limits, degrades, and hinders. Of course, there are reasons to say ‘no,’ but what if you just tried saying ‘yes’ to one new thing today? What might happen? Going out to dinner, trying a new activity, visiting with a friend. The possibilities are endless.”

Connie F., a new resident at Chestnut Square, recently decided to try Wii bowling—an interactive video game that simulates the actual movements of the sport. “I noticed it on the community’s program calendar and wasn’t exactly sure what to expect,” she explains. “It turned out to be a whole lot of fun and very easy to learn...I can't wait to attend again."

The benefits of trying out a “yes” energy are too good to pass up, as they can expand your view and your world exponentially.

For those experiencing grief and loss, it might feel very difficult to practice "yes" energy. But having "yes" energy can be beneficial in these situations as well.

“When it comes to grief, saying ‘yes’ means accepting whatever emotions arise at any moment of the day,” says Melanie. “Are you crying over cabbages at the grocery store? Say ‘yes.’ Are you hankering for a favorite food of your loved one? Say ‘yes.’ Do you have to leave your apartment to get away from sadness? Say ‘yes.’ Whatever the emotion, whatever arises for you today, accept it as part of the grieving process, and say ‘yes.’”

In good times or bad, we each have the opportunity to use the power of “yes” energy to make a positive impact in our daily lives. Let’s give it a try!

As seniors weigh various factors when considering a retirement community, they often encounter myths that unnecessarily delay the decision-making process. Renee Bellew, Chestnut Square’s Director of Sales and Marketing, recently shared five common myths, and the truth behind each one:

Myth #1: "I Don't Need All the Services and Amenities"

One of the best ways to tackle this myth is to ask yourself: Do I really want to continue dealing with the stresses and upkeep of owning a home?

At Chestnut Square, residents have countless opportunities to express their artistic side. From watercolor classes, to paint and sip parties, to themed crafting projects, there's never a shortage of fun options to choose from.

Art instructor Mary Ann Phelan, who leads our popular watercolor class, loves seeing her Chestnut Square students experience the joy of art.

"Most of the residents in our class started with little to no experience painting, but now they're consistently creating beautiful pieces," Mary Ann explains. "When I hear how often their children or grandchildren ask to have one of their paintings, it warms my heart."

Beyond the joy of creative expression, art classes stimulate cognitive function, helping to maintain mental acuity and memory. The focus and concentration required can also enhance mindfulness, reducing stress levels and promoting better health.

And of course, there's the social aspect and sense of community that art classes provide. "I really enjoy the conversations I have with friends when we're painting together," says resident Kathy C. "It's relaxing and something I always look forward to."

For those who might be apprehensive about starting art classes, Mary Ann has some very encouraging advice. "Everyone, myself included, was a beginner at some point, and we all felt the same initial self-doubt," she says. "However, if you stick with it and just get over that early hump, you'll see yourself making tremendous strides. With each new painting, your self-confidence will soar."

Connecting with Nature at Chestnut Square

For those who love being surrounded by nature and scenic views, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a community with a more perfect setting than Chestnut Square at The Glen. “It feels like you’re in the middle of a painting,” says resident Jim G.

Chestnut Square’s beautiful campus is filled with majestic trees, manicured flower gardens, outdoor seating areas, a gazebo courtyard that hosts outdoor concerts, and a private planter garden.

“To make Chestnut Square even more colorful, we recently hosted a special ‘Planting Day’ where residents helped arrange and plant our annual summer pots,” says Jamie Wolfe, Director of Life Enrichment. “We were joined by Christine Kaldschmidt and her team from Sebert Landscaping, who graciously donated all the supplies for this fun event.”

As residents and staff enjoyed planting coleus, begonias, impatiens, and SunPatiens, the Sebert team shared tips for making the arrangements balanced and attractive by featuring a tall centerpiece (thriller), trailing plants around the edges (spiller), and medium-sized plants to fill out the space (filler).

“Being outside and surrounded by nature has many health benefits such as reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep quality, and boosting immunity and overall health,” Christine explains. “Chestnut Square is unique in the number of ways you can connect with the environment, both on their campus and in The Glen. It’s wonderful to see how the residents embrace that.”

Understanding the Difference Between Senior Living Options

As older adults begin to research different senior living communities, the number of options can sometimes feel overwhelming. All sorts of factors must be simultaneously weighed such as location, floor plans, lifestyle, and perhaps most important of all, “Which level of care is best suited for my needs?”

To clarify the process, it’s helpful to first understand the key differences:

Independent Living Communities

Independent living communities—often called retirement communities—are for seniors who can live on their own, without daily assistance, and want to live among people their age.

While sometimes there may be overlap between independent living and assisted living communities in terms of amenities, independent living usually means that residents are self-sufficient and don’t need hands-on care. Services often include:

Spacious apartments with fully-equipped kitchens
Maintenance-free living with extensive services and amenities
On-site and off-site programs and events like fitness classes, guest lectures, concerts, art lessons, book clubs and social gatherings
An indoor parking garage option, as well as scheduled transportation and group outings
Restaurant-style dining, housekeeping, and 24/7 concierge services
An in-house emergency call system such as the Lifeline pendant

Assisted Living Communities

Assisted living is a good option for seniors who need help with daily tasks. These communities typically provide:

Smaller floor plans (often in a studio or 1-BR layout) with limited equipped kitchens
Help with the activities of daily living (ADLs) like bathing, grooming and medication management
Dining and assisted living programming based on residents’ needs and abilities
A nursing supervisor on-site 24/7. Additional care is available at additional costs.

CCRCs

Most CCRCs require that you pay upfront for future levels of care—whether you ever need it or not.

Bethany Methodist Appoints Vera Lampe as New CEO

Vera has been a member of the Bethany Methodist management team for 16 years, the last 14 as Executive Director of Chestnut Square at The Glen, the organization’s flagship retirement community in Glenview.

“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Vera since she first joined the company in 2007, and I can’t think of anyone better prepared to lead us into the next chapter of our story than her,” said Sunny Lopez, who is retiring as CEO after four years in the position and 32 years with the company. Our story began 134 years ago with the vision of one faith-filled couple, Rev. and Mrs. C.M. Lindgren. With the help of their son and donations from the Swedish Methodist Church, the first Bethany Home opened as a residence for Chicago seniors in 1889.

Inspired by the Wesleyan tradition and faithful to the Lindgren’s vision, Bethany continued to provide health and housing services for seniors across Chicago and the northern suburbs.

In 2001, Bethany Methodist decided to expand its mission to Glenview by building Chestnut Square, an independent senior living community. Selected as part of The Glen’s master development project, our community’s groundbreaking ceremony was held in the summer of 2002. Just over a year later, in September 2003, Chestnut Square’s very first resident moved in!

Our services were further enhanced in 2008 as Bethany acquired Partners in Healthcare, an on-site private duty caregiver agency that offers supportive services to the residents of Chestnut Square and clients throughout Chicago and the northern suburbs.

Today, Chestnut is proud to be celebrating 20 wonderful years in Glenview. Someone You Should Know: Ann Burnstine

Of all the smiling faces you’ll see at Chestnut Square, Ann Burnstine is certainly one of our favorites! Whether she’s volunteering in our card shop, attending a fitness class, or enjoying a guest lecture in the Great Room, Ann is the type of person who immediately brightens your day when you see her.

“I’ve always enjoyed the company of other people, so finding an active community like Chestnut Square has been a real perk for me,” she explains. “When my husband passed away a few years ago, I knew that it was time to sell our house. I visited five different facilities, but this was the only place that felt like home.”

Since moving to Chestnut in 2017, Ann has found that her social circle expanded quicky. “The dining room is probably where I’ve met the most people. There’s no assigned seating and I’m the type of person that likes to rotate tables each day so I can stay connected with everybody. I’ve made so many new friends here…it’s been wonderful.”

Ann also enjoys working every Monday afternoon at the North Shore Senior Center in Northfield, where she greets visitors and helps run the gift shop. “I think I’m happiest when I’m busy, so I have no plans of slowing down.”

An Incredible Journey from Scotland to Chestnut Square!

David Anderson, one of Chestnut Square’s newest residents, is a natural extrovert who quickly makes friends wherever he goes. “Being from Scotland, there’s a certain sense of wanderlust that’s in my DNA…I think it’s why I love traveling so much and meeting new people.”

Born and raised in Edinburgh, David earned an MBA from the University of Chicago and would go on to spend 53 years working for Deloitte in various corporate roles across the globe. His assignments included stays in Scotland, Canada, Singapore, Italy, Vietnam, and the United States.

“I also have a passion for teaching, and for many years I served as an Assistant Adjunct Professor at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.”

As an avid reader with a penchant for spy thrillers, he enjoys the works of several authors, including Ian Fleming and Ian Rankin. “You can’t forget that Sean Connery is from Edinburgh just like me,” he says with a wide grin.

When David retired in 2015, he knew he wanted to settle down in the Chicago area to be near family, but finding the right spot would take a little time.

“At my previous residence, most of my neighbors weren’t of my generation, so meeting new people was somewhat difficult. My daughter knew I was looking for a more social environment and she recommended that I tour Chestnut Square. It wasn’t too long before I discovered she was really on to something.”

This past April, David moved into his new 2-bedroom apartment.

Resident-Librarian Elinor Epstein Surprised with Special Recognition

In 2003, when Elinor Epstein moved to Chestnut Square at The Glen as a founding resident, her past experience as a middle school librarian was immediately put to good use.

“The community had received a huge collection of donated books, but everything was still in boxes,” explains Elinor. “I thought it would be fun to lead a committee of fellow residents to sort out and catalogue everything, so we had a library in the truest sense of the word.”

After a few weeks of intense volunteering, the Chestnut Square library was officially dedicated, and it has remained one of the most popular destinations for residents and families to this day.

“Organizing the collection is an ongoing project, but one that I really enjoy,” Elinor says. “When you live in such a great place, helping out feels like the least I can do.”

For 18 years, Elinor’s enthusiasm has been instrumental in managing—and expanding—Chestnut Square's wonderful selection of reading materials.

That’s why earlier this month, the community’s management team decided to surprise her with a special plaque that's been mounted at the library's entrance. The inscription states:

As we enter the final weeks of the year, we are hopeful that this year, unlike last year, you will be gathering again for the holidays with family. If nothing else, these months of the pandemic have taught us a lot about how quickly our lives can change and the importance of having a plan in place to deal with those changes.

We have seen and heard so many stories of the toll that isolation has taken on elder loved ones during the pandemic. We are social beings and need the contact and stimulation of our peers and family to keep us healthy. Fortunately for Chestnut Square’s residents, we were able to socialize and gather safely, following safety protocols, to stave off the long months of isolation many experienced during the pandemic.

As Chestnut Square residents Kathy and Murray Rosenblatt expressed, “Because of COVID-19, there’s no escaping that things will be quite different for a while. But that’s going to be the case wherever you are. What’s important is that we found a really nice community that’s looking out for us no matter what. We feel safer and happier than when we were alone in our home.”

Resident Volunteering Thrives at Chestnut Square at The Glen

Senior citizens account for one of the largest volunteering groups in the United States, and it might be for good reason. Aside from the altruistic act of helping someone in need, the volunteers themselves experience countless physical and mental benefits.

From promoting mobility and fitness, improving mental acuity, to fostering a sense of achievement and purpose, volunteering is a win-win situation for all involved.

Such is the case at Chestnut Square at The Glen, where many residents take part in a wide variety of opportunities that focus on giving back.

“Our Prayer Shawl Group is a recent example where residents have come together to express their artistic sides, all while doing something incredibly gratifying that will benefit others,” explains The Rev. Belinda Chandler, Chaplain at Chestnut Square. “Together with Megan Green, our Resident Services Manager, the group meets in the Arts & Crafts Room and knits beautiful shawls, scarves, and other items that are then donated to people needing an emotional lift.”

Some shawls have been given to fellow Chestnut residents facing a health crisis or hardship, while other items will be donated to local churches and homeless shelters.

“Every time we gather to knit, I’m moved by the generosity I see,” explains Gail Willson, a Chestnut Square resident who serves a leading role in the Prayer Shawl Group. “I’ve also made a lot of new friends in the process, so I look forward to every gathering we have.”

Olive Szymoniuk, another prolific knitter, says, “I like knowing that what we do ends up brightening someone else’s day...and I must confess, I find the simple act of knitting with the others to be very relaxing!”

Esther Gabrielides adds, “My favorite part when knitting is thinking about the people who will receive the shawls and how this can give them hope.”

Chestnut Square hosts various other volunteer opportunities as well, including an annual food drive to benefit the Northfield Township Food Pantry.

A corner of the Chestnut Square lobby is transformed into a collection center where residents and staff drop off non-perishable items such as boxed cereal, canned goods, pasta, pancake mix, jelly, jam, preserves, and juice boxes. Donations are used to help local families experiencing hard times and food insecurity.

“I’m continually inspired by the residents in our community,” shares Vera Lampe, Chestnut Square’s Executive Director. “They are so enthusiastic about getting involved in different causes, and their optimism spreads throughout the building and beyond.”

Why Getting a Flu Shot This Year is More Important Than Ever

With the Delta variant on everyone’s mind and many seniors scheduled to get a Covid-19 booster in the coming weeks and months, it can be easy to overlook the importance of also getting a flu shot this year.

Because last year’s flu season was unusually mild due to widespread masking and social distancing, everyone—particularly seniors—will likely be facing a higher stress test from this year’s flu strain.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GET THE FLU SHOT?

It’s recommended that seniors receive this year’s flu shot in September or October as full protection isn’t achieved until at least two weeks after inoculation. High dose flu shots for seniors are conveniently available at most pharmacies, but be sure to check with your doctor about which option is best for you.

Since the flu vaccine is typically 50% to 60% effective in any given year, this statistic leads many to incorrectly believe that getting the shot isn’t worth the trouble. In reality, even when the vaccine doesn’t completely prevent illness, it will usually lessen the severity and duration of an infection.

A Senior Guide to Low Sodium Diets

It’s incredibly easy to lose track of all the hidden sources of salt in the foods we eat, and as a result, nearly 90 percent of seniors in the U.S. consume too much sodium in their diets.

The American Heart Association recommends that adults receive no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day (roughly the amount in 1 teaspoon of salt). However, the average adult consumes about 50 percent more than this recommended value.

It’s remarkable when you reflect on just how far we’ve come in the past year and a half. Even during the darkest days of the pandemic, when the world waited on if—and when—a vaccine would ever come, Chestnut Square never lost its optimism and shared sense of community.

“I am grateful for everyone at Chestnut Square—the residents, their families, and our incredible staff that’s been committed to keeping everyone safe,” says Vera Lampe, Executive Director. “Now, with our community vaccinated, life is finally starting to return to normal. 5 Sun Protection Tips for Older Adults

As Chicago-area seniors spend more time outside during the summer months, having adequate protection from the sun is incredibly important. According to the National Institutes of Health, over 40 percent of Americans aged 65 and older will develop skin cancer at least once, and while UV exposure is cumulative over the decades, the potential damage done in our senior years is intensified by the fact that our skin becomes thinner as we age.

Here are 5 easy and effective ways to protect yourself this summer while still enjoying the beautiful outdoors:

1. WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN

Yes, it’s something we’ve been told countless times, but taking a few minutes to apply sunscreen before heading outside can make a world of difference. It’s also important to use the right kind and the right amount. Be sure to purchase brands labeled “broad spectrum” with an SPF of at least 15, and if you’re going to be outside for at least a few hours, SPF 30 is strongly recommended. For the best protection, reapply sunscreen every two to three hours.

2. STAY IN THE SHADE

Sitting underneath a tree or canopy isn’t just good for skin health, it’s also a great way to keep cool and avoid heat exhaustion. Staying indoors during the peak sunlight hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will also help reduce your total UV exposure.

3. MONITOR CHANGES TO YOUR SKIN

In addition to the screening your doctor performs, seniors should closely monitor their skin every few months to check for changes and new spots. Moles that are asymmetrical, have irregular borders, have a strange color, have a diameter larger than a pencil eraser, or that have changed in shape over time pose the greatest risks. Like most things, the earlier you catch a potential problem, the better the outcomes. The CDC also recommends that older adults see their primary care physician every 6 months and a skin specialist at least once per year.

4. WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

Long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats are another convenient way to find easy protection from the sun. Breathable fabrics like cotton and linen will keep you the most comfortable, and of course, don’t forget to wear sunglasses that feature UV protection.

Also known as compression stockings, these inexpensive garments are available in various lengths and apply pressure to promote blood flow in your leg veins. An infection of the legs or feet , like cellulitis, gangrene, or oozing dermatitis.

Here are 10 scientifically proven tips for overcoming that daunting task you've been avoiding:

1. Pick Your Poison

The key to beating procrastination is focus. We often give ourselves too many things to do and become overwhelmed. Start by choosing just ONE thing that you’ve been procrastinating and make a commitment to complete that task in the next week.

2. Start Today

Once you’ve narrowed it down to one task, you must take immediate action. If it feels daunting or you don’t think you have enough time to complete the task, do the Five-Minute Miracle below.

3. Five-Minute Miracle

This technique involves asking yourself “What action can I take in less than five minutes TODAY that moves this forward even the tiniest bit?” Once you’ve identified a small action, set a timer for five minutes and spend it working on the task. 8 Habits That Can Improve Your Memory and Cognitive Health

If you frequently misplace your reading glasses or forget the name of a casual acquaintance, you're certainly not alone. While some forms of memory loss, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s, require medical attention, there is also normal age-related cognitive decline that nearly all people experience once they reach their 70s or 80s.

These “normal” changes can still be frustrating and pose challenges, but thankfully, studies have shown some specific steps that seniors can take to strengthen their overall brain health —and possibly even prevent more serious memory decline:

1. Get a good night’s sleep

Decades of research supports the fact that sleep is a critical time when memories consolidate and get stored. And that means missing out on sleep—or high enough quality sleep—can compromise some of those processes. The National Sleep Foundation recommends getting between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimal health and brain function.

2. Exercise regularly

What is exercise not good for? A recent finding from the American Academy of Neurology suggests that regular exercise is one of the most important things that people with mild memory problems can do to help stop those symptoms from getting worse—or turning into serious neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.

3. Repeat or re-learn the information later

Psychologists and others call this one the “spacing effect.” The idea is that the more you re-learn or remind yourself of information again and again, spaced out over time, the better you’ll retain that information in the long run. Perhaps you first learn about an Olympic figure skater’s difficult upbringing by watching a news clip of his story; then a day or so later you read an article about that same skater; and then a few days later a friend starts telling you about the same figure skater’s story. Repetition helps make that story stick in your head—and so does the fact that you re-learned that information on different days in different settings.

4. Test yourself

People often think testing is useful because it tells you what you know and what you don’t. But the more important power of testing is providing practice for retrieving information that you’ve learned and establishing that connection in the brain, explains Rosalind Potts, PhD, of University College London. For example, in one study that tested a group of students on new information they had learned one week earlier, students who were also tested on the new information immediately after learning it outperformed students who were simply instructed to study the information and wait for the final test.

5. Put the information in your “memory palace”

The idea is if you want to remember something, such as a shopping list or a code, you visualize those items or numbers in different rooms of your house (or some other physical place you are very familiar with). The “memory palace” approach (also called the “Method of Loci”) has been studied extensively in psychology, and research shows it can be more valuable in terms of remembering than pure intellectual capacity, and also more effective than straightforward repetition and memorization.

6. Use a mnemonic device

It’s easier to remember things that relate to knowledge we already have because we can connect it to past memories. That’s why mnemonic devices work—they create a bridge between two pieces of information. If you want to remember the meaning of the Spanish word “zumo” (“juice” in English), you might conjure up an image in your head of a sumo wrestler drinking juice. When you hear the word “zumo,” you might then think of that sumo wrestler drinking his juice and remember the meaning of the word.

7. Pay attention

Sure, it’s obvious. But concentration is important if you’re trying to learn something new. “If you don’t pay much attention to the information, the likelihood you encode that in your long-term memory is low,” says Sean Kang, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Education at Dartmouth College. For example, how many Americans could accurately draw the details of the dollar bill, even though we likely look at it all the time? When trying to memorize something, we’re often distracted by peripheral cues such as nearby people or noises. However, if we choose to completely focus our attention on something (even for a few seconds), it’s amazing how much stronger our long-term recall can be.

8. Make it relevant to your life

Based on the neuroscience explanation of how memory works, if you really want to remember something, your best bet is trying to connect it to some other part of your life or a topic you already know, says Blake Richards, DPhil, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. “Figure out some other facet of life for why it’s relevant—and use it.”

Fred and Eleanore Radzialowski Discuss Glenview Roots and Recent Move to Chestnut Square

With deep ties to the area, the Radzialowskis have a great appreciation for Chicago’s northern suburbs. For over 50 years, Glenview has been their home and the couple have been active residents, including Fred’s tenure as President of the Glenview Senior Center’s Executive Board and Eleanore’s extensive volunteer work.

“Eleanore and I have been together since high school,” Fred shared with a big smile. “When we moved to the Chicago area after getting married, we chose Glenview which turned out to be a great place to put down roots and raise our children.”

Fred, holding a PhD in Pharmacology, worked in pharmaceutical research including many years at Searle. Eleanore earned a Master’s in Social Work and focused her career on serving hospital and long-term care facilities.

The Radzialowskis have also been long-time members of St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church in Glenview—including Eleanore’s 15 years of service in the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.

David and Shirley Wu Join The Chestnut Square Family

At Chestnut Square at The Glen, we’re proud to offer a truly holistic lifestyle that attracts seniors of all faiths. Every resident has a unique journey that leads them to our beautiful independent living community, and for David and Shirley Wu, that journey happens to span over 70 countries and 30 years serving in various leadership roles within the United Methodist Church.

“I grew up on a farm in the American heartland, and David was born and raised in Indonesia,” Shirley explains. “Our paths crossed early in our careers when David was serving as a pastor in North Dakota and I was serving at the same church during my mission itineration.”

The two quickly learned that they shared a remarkably similar background and had each attended the same seminary in Kentucky. “I was earning a Theological Master’s in Divinity,” David recalls, “and Shirley was earning her Master’s in Religious Education.”

Shortly after marrying in 1972, the United Methodist Church sent the couple to serve in Singapore at Trinity Theological College, where they remained for the next 20 years as they raised a family.

When their children reached adulthood, David and Shirley continued to serve the UMC in New York and abroad—with an emphasis in Eastern Europe and Asia—before retiring in 2006.

This past August, the Wus embarked on their newest journey and moved into a new 2-bedroom apartment at Chestnut Square at The Glen.

Visits to the doctor—whether it’s a routine checkup, a health screening, or a consultation for a serious medical condition—are never occasions that people look forward to. The anticipation ahead of the appointment can frequently produce anxiety and scattered thoughts about every possible outcome, regardless of how unlikely.

For all these reasons, our focus during the actual visit is often diminished. When you add to the mix that your face time with the doctor can sometimes be five minutes or less, it’s very easy to leave the appointment with a poor recollection of everything that was discussed, or numerous questions that you forgot to ask.

For the senior population, getting the most out of every medical appointment is even more crucial. With that in mind, the National Institute on Aging recommends using the following 6 tips to maximize every visit and make it easier for you and your doctor to cover everything you need to talk about.

1) Make a List and Prioritize Your Concerns

Make a list of what you want to discuss. For example, do you have a new symptom you want to ask the doctor about? Are you concerned about how a treatment is affecting your daily life? If you have more than a few items to discuss, put them in order on paper and ask about the most important ones first. Don’t put off the things that are really on your mind until the end of your appointment—bring them up right away!

2) Take Information with You to the Doctor

Some doctors suggest you put all your prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements in a bag and bring them with you. Others recommend you bring a list of everything you take and the dose. You should also take your insurance cards, names and phone numbers of other doctors you see, and your medical records if the doctor doesn’t already have them.

3) Consider Bringing a Family Member or Friend

Your companion can remind you what you planned to discuss with the doctor if you forget, and can also take notes for you and help you remember what the doctor said. You can still request time alone with the doctor to discuss sensitive matters (your family member or friend can simply step into the waiting room). For the best results, let your companion know in advance how he or she can be most helpful.

4) Keep Your Doctor Up to Date

Let your doctor know what has happened in your life since your last visit. If you have been treated in the emergency room or by a specialist, tell the doctor right away. Mention any changes you have noticed in your appetite, weight, sleep, or energy level. Also tell the doctor about any changes in medications you take or the effects they have had on you.

5) Be Sure You Can See and Hear as Well as Possible

Many older adults use glasses or need hearing aids. Remember to take your eyeglasses to the appointment, and if you have a hearing aid, make sure that it’s working properly and that you’re wearing it. It’s also a good idea to let the doctor and staff know if you have difficulty seeing or hearing. For example, you may want to say: “My hearing makes it hard to understand everything you’re saying. It helps a lot when you speak slowly and face me when you're talking.”

6) Request an Interpreter if You Need One

Even though some English-speaking doctors know basic medical terms in Spanish or other languages, you may feel more comfortable speaking in your native language, especially when it comes to sensitive topics. Call the doctor’s office ahead of time as they may need to plan for an interpreter to be available. Always let the doctor, your interpreter, or the staff know if you do not understand your diagnosis or the instructions the doctor gives you. Don’t let language barriers stop you from asking questions or voicing your concerns.

Regardless of the reason for your next medical visit, you have the power to be your own best advocate! Make a point to prepare ahead of time, organize your questions and concerns on paper and bring them with you, and never hesitate to enlist the support of family, friends and other resources that can be available during your appointment.

It is often said that “laughter is the best medicine,” and as it turns out, medical studies have confirmed that there’s quite a bit of truth behind this claim. Regardless of our age, the benefits of laughter are tangible :

Soothes tension . Laughter can stimulate circulation and muscle relaxation, which can help reduce some physical symptoms of stress.

Improves your immune system . Positive thoughts (the kind you get while laughing) release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially more serious illnesses.

Relieves pain . Believe it or not, laughter can cause the body to make its own natural pain relievers that might make you feel better.

Connect with people and deal with difficult situations . Think about a time you went through something hard and someone made a joke to make you feel better. Sometimes it works. Try it. Also, don’t you feel more bonded with friends and family when you share a good laugh?

Stimulates organs and increases endorphins . Laughing boosts your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart and muscles and enhances the endorphins released by your brain. Endorphins trigger a positive feeling in the body.

Improves your mood . Laughter can help lessen depression and anxiety and make you feel better overall.

Burns calories and increases blood flow. If you’ve ever noticed that laughing heavily for a long stretch leaves your face and abdomen sore, it’s because dozens of different muscles in your body are being activated in the process.

MAKING TIME TO LAUGH EACH DAY

Much like exercise, we can make a conscious decision to laugh a certain number of minutes each day—even if it feels forced at first. Health journalist Jocelyn Solis-Moreira recently revealed the following methods for incorporating more laughter into our everyday lives:

Laughter yoga : This form of yoga consists of prolonged voluntary laughing, clapping, and deep abdominal breathing techniques. A 2014 study found laughter yoga effectively decreased anxiety and stress and improved mood.

Make time for the optimistic people in your life : Find laughter by interacting with upbeat family members and friends, while avoiding individuals who are often negative or toxic. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, a 15-minute phone call or video chat can make a huge difference.

Check out some comedy : Turning on your favorite sitcom, reading a funny book, or scrolling through funny pet videos on the internet are all easy steps to instantly boost your mood and produce laughter.

Don't be afraid to laugh at yourself : While people tend to suppress their laughter in public due to fears of feeling judged, one way to train yourself to laugh is to put yourself in the mindset of a child. "Do not dwell on the negatives," explains Dr. Julian Lagoy, a board-certified psychiatrist who has studied the health benefits of laughter. "Try to be more like a child by laughing at ordinary things and enjoying the little, fun moments in life."

Achieving Restful Sleep During These Chaotic Times

So many of us wish we could be getting more hours of better quality sleep, especially during the heightened stress of the pandemic and the recent political turmoil. If you find yourself struggling to fall asleep, waking up multiple times, or waking up earlier than you wanted, read on for some tips to help you rest easy.

The first thing we can do to help our bodies fall and stay asleep is to establish a calming evening routine. Start encouraging your body to wind down two hours before bedtime. Turn off electronic devices such as phones, computers, and TVs. Dim the lights, put on your sleeping clothes, and complete any pre-sleep personal care you need. It helps to have a calming ritual, such as enjoying a mug of herbal tea, to signal to your body that rest is coming.

It is also helpful to create a regular sleep schedule. It’s very difficult for your body to establish a healthy circadian rhythm if your sleeping hours are inconsistent. Aim to go to bed and wake up within the same 30-minute window. Be careful with naps, especially longer naps later in the day, as they may throw off your body’s rhythms. Of course, everyone is different, so it’s important to experiment with your schedule and find what works best for you.

Some nutritional therapy practices can give our bodies the resources they need to feel grounded and calm. Try not to eat a big meal within two hours of your bedtime, as digesting food can keep you awake. However, if you’re starving before bed, it’s okay to have a light, protein-based snack, such as yogurt. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, sugar, and other stimulating foods towards the end of the day. You may even find it useful to eliminate these things from your diet if you are really looking to promote better sleep.

Various foods have nutritional properties that can boost the brain chemicals we need for sleep. You can incorporate these nourishing foods into your meals and snacks throughout the day, as they will give your body what it needs to create healthy biochemical rhythms. Some of these foods include leafy green vegetables, dark cherries, beets, honey, fish, nuts, eggs, black beans, and poultry.

When lying in bed and unable to get your mind to relax, try this meditation. Focus on each part of your body, starting with your toes, and invite that body part to relax. Move up through your legs, your torso, your arms, and your face. You can focus on each individual finger and toe and facial feature, inviting a sense of restful peace into every space in your body.

If sleep struggles persist for an extended period of time, be sure to talk to your doctor about possibly incorporating supplements or medication. Some folks find that their sleep improves when they take calcium, magnesium, melatonin or vitamin B6. Others may benefit from herbal remedies. Remember that everyone’s body is different, so supplements and/or prescriptions will have different results for each person. Listen to your body (and always check with your doctor) to find what works best for you.

Renaissance Man Shares His Journey to Chestnut Square

Chestnut Square resident Bill Lederer has enjoyed a lifetime of artistic expression, excitement and adventure. Now retired, Bill’s time as a fundraiser for various non-profits provided him with a rewarding career that touched the lives of many people in need. However, it was his time moonlighting as a playwright and poet that best defined Bill’s story and personal journey.

“I’ve always been drawn to the written word,” he explains. “I simply love to write and have had over 30 plays produced in such theaters as Hull House, Barry Street, Old Town Players, Triangle Art Center, Body Politic, Theatre Building, Athenaeum and Prop Theatre.” His teleplay, The Reader and the Writer , was originally produced by WTTW and later aired throughout the United States and Canada.

Bill has also spent 30 years volunteering at local prisons and teaching poetry classes to inmates.

His prolific literary career aside, perhaps nothing in Bill’s life has led to more fame — or “infamy” as he jokes — as the time he survived five days stranded alone in the Grand Canyon.

“I was a marathon runner and had wanted to set out on a ‘grand adventure’ that would bring me closer to nature,” Bill says. “But my overconfidence nearly killed me.”

After five days of straddling death in temperatures exceeding 110-degrees, and barely able to move, Bill was finally rescued. No one could believe he survived the ordeal, and much to his dismay, he returned to Chicago as a mini celebrity—being featured on news reports and later on A&E and the Discovery Channel as “the man who beat the Grand Canyon.”

“My family never fully forgave me for the scare I gave them!” Bill offered.

Preventing Falls at Home: 7 Strategies to Protect Older Adults

Approximately one in three Americans over the age of 65 will suffer a fall each year, often resulting in broken bones, head injuries and other physical trauma. Research has also shown that falling once will double your chances of falling again.

According to the CDC , the greatest risk factors for falls include:

Lower body weakness
Vitamin D deficiency
Difficulties with walking and balance
Use of medicines, such as tranquilizers, sedatives, or antidepressants. Even some over-the-counter medicines can affect balance and how steady you are on your feet.
Vision problems
Foot pain or poor footwear
Home hazards such as uneven steps, throw rugs or clutter that can be tripped over.

So, what can be done to reduce the chances for a serious fall? Thankfully, the answer to this important question is: plenty!

As a guideline, the following 7 strategies have shown the greatest benefit for preventing falls in older adults:

1. Address any medical conditions

Any and all loose clothing that could catch on a door frame, nail, or furniture should be discarded. Choose shoes that fit properly and be sure to avoid slick soles and loose material.

5. Improve your home’s lighting

Your home should be neither too bright nor too dark. A dark home hides hazards, and a home that is too bright can be just as dangerous. This includes rooms in the home that may let in too much sunlight during peak hours.

7. Get proper nutrition

During Chicago’s long winter, the majority of home heating systems will significantly reduce the amount of moisture in the air. When the weather turns especially cold (below 20 degrees), it’s not uncommon for the indoor relative humidity to drop as low as 10 or 15 percent. By comparison, that’s drier than the Sahara Desert!

Health journalist Lex Harvey recently revealed that humidifiers are not only an effective solution for adding moisture back into your home, but they are also associated with numerous health benefits :

1. Reduces the spread of germs

Humidifiers can help prevent you from getting sick by adding moisture to the air. In particular, research has found that humidifiers can help protect against the flu—and may even reduce the spread of COVID-19. A 2013 study found that if indoor humidity levels are less than 23%, influenza's infectivity rate — or its ability to infect others via respiratory air droplets — is between 70% and 77%. If indoor humidity is kept above 43%, the infectivity rate is much lower, between 14% and 22%.

Dry air pulls moisture from the skin, making it feel itchy and irritated. Humidifiers can counter this effect by increasing moisture in the air to help avoid discomfort and restore skin health. For example, a 2008 study in a Japanese hospital found that using a humidifier in winter boosted humidity from 32.8% to 43.9% and relieved dry and itchy skin symptoms among staff.

3. Relieves asthma and allergy symptoms

Humidifiers can help with allergy and asthma symptoms by soothing tissues in the nose and throat. This can help combat:

4. May loosen congestion

When you get sick, the cells lining your respiratory tract generate more mucus, and when the mucus dries, it can become "sticky" — which makes it hard to blow or cough. Increasing air moisture can make it easier for you to expel the mucus when coughing or blowing your nose, by preventing it from drying.

5. Alleviates snoring

Humidifiers can also reduce snoring from nasal congestion by helping to loosen the mucus blocking your airway. In general, “the more open your airways, the less snoring," explains Dr. Andrew Stiehm, a pulmonologist with Allina Health’s United Lung and Sleep Centre.

What’s the right amount of indoor moisture?

The Mayo Clinic has found that the ideal indoor humidity is between 30% and 50% , and the best way to monitor humidity levels in your home is with a hygrometer. This inexpensive device, which looks like a thermometer, measures the amount of moisture in the air. Many humidifiers come with a built-in hygrometer, but they can also be purchased separately from most hardware and department stores.

Finding the best humidifier for your home

There are countless portable humidifier models to choose from, and depending on the size of your living space, you may decide that placing one in the bedroom and one in the living room is appropriate.

Whichever style and brand you select, it’s important to remember that if your humidifier is not maintained properly, it can actually accumulate bacteria that can worsen allergy symptoms or cause sickness and infections. Therefore, make sure to clean your humidifier and monitor humidity levels on a regular basis to achieve the best health benefits.

Meditation Made Easy: A Quick Guide to Reducing Stress Through Mindfulness

When I ask folks if they have ever tried meditation, the most common response is “I’d love to meditate, but I’m terrible at it.” When I ask them to elaborate, they usually describe their failed attempts to “clear the mind,” to reach a state where the brain is perfectly still.

But, contrary to popular belief, the goal of meditation is NOT to achieve this internal stillness. In fact, this misconception perpetuates a false perception about how our brains function.

When I explain meditation to my students, I compare our brains to puppies—always bouncing around, looking for the latest toy or snack or new friend. I ask them if puppies are “bad dogs” because they don’t want to be still. They are quick to understand that this constant movement is in the puppy’s nature, and that even the wiggliest puppies are still good dogs. In this way, I introduce the idea that our brains are not “bad” because we can’t get them to stop moving—that constant motion is simply part of their nature.

When we meditate, we are not trying to change how our brains work. Instead, we are practicing building awareness and acknowledgement around our thought patterns. With this awareness, we can work to reprogram thought patterns that no longer serve us.

The first step in building awareness is to experience a more expansive mindfulness of the present moment. Try this quick and easy exercise. Find any position where your body can be comfortable for a few minutes. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Feel the air move in and out of your nostrils. Feel your belly move as you breathe.

Now imagine that you are observing your thoughts, watching them go by as you might watch clouds drift along in the sky. Instead of judging these thoughts as good or bad, just get really curious about what your brain is doing. Are you having similar thoughts over and over? Are you thinking about the past or the future? Are you distracted by sensations in your body or activity in the room around you? All of these observations are valid, and will give you important information about how your brain likes to occupy itself.

This sense of curiosity is key because it helps us get familiar with any unconscious habits that might be causing us harm. For example, if you notice during your meditation that your brain is fixating on a past experience that still causes you anxiety, it might be useful to acknowledge that, in this moment of sitting and breathing and watching your thoughts, there is nothing you can do to control or change the past.

Once you remind yourself that this anxiety is not serving you in this moment, you can let that thought pattern go, perhaps even telling your brain that it is welcome to return to this event once your meditation is over. Then you might take a moment to refocus on the feeling of your breath in your body. You can continue this practice of watching, acknowledging, and releasing for however long you choose to meditate.

That’s all meditation is. It is simple, accessible, and can be practiced anytime, anywhere. If your puppy brain happens to experience a moment of stillness, great! But if not, know that this practice is giving you all of meditation’s well-documented stress-relieving benefits, wherever your thoughts may go.

Pandemic Strengthens Sense of Community at Chestnut Square

As the world enters the tenth month of the pandemic, Chestnut Square is filled with gratitude as we continue to provide our residents and clients with exceptional service and care.

While maintaining everyone’s safety remains our top priority, we have also been proactive in adapting our program calendar to allow safe and socially distanced opportunities for residents to come together and maintain friendships.

This past year, Chestnut Square has hosted multiple outdoor concert performances and a magic show in our beautiful gazebo courtyard. In September, we celebrated all 2020 birthdays with a special Birthday Car Parade that featured some truly incredible decorations by our residents’ families.

Small groups gathered for fitness classes, book clubs, various discussion groups, TED Talks, putting green competitions, resident steering committees, movie screenings, travelogue presentations and Halloween-themed contests.

We also commemorated Veterans Day with a virtual assembly organized by Willowbrook School, and eight of our resident veterans taped interviews for Honor Flight Chicago!

During the holidays, residents will also be active in community giving initiatives that provide toys for at-risk children and food security for local families.

Hearing Aids Can Be a Valuable Investment for Your Long-Term Health

Only 20 percent of Americans who could benefit from hearing aids wear them, according to the National Institutes of Health. Among the most common reasons that people gave for delaying the decision, the top responses cited by Consumer Reports were:

Concerns regarding the cost (42%)
Haven’t had their hearing tested (26%)
Embarrassed to wear one (18%)
Wearing aids caused physical discomfort (12%)
A friend or family member did poorly with one (10%)

Unfortunately, untreated hearing loss affects a lot more than just the ability to clearly recognize sounds. The associated health risks can include problems with walking, an increased risk for falls, and various forms of cognitive decline such as dementia.

“Brain scans show us that hearing loss may contribute to a faster rate of atrophy in the brain,” says Dr. Frank Lin of Johns Hopkins University . “Hearing loss also contributes to social isolation. You may not want to be with people as much, and when you are, you may not engage in conversation…These factors may contribute to dementia.”

Dr. Lin’s research has also shown that mild hearing loss doubled dementia risk, moderate loss tripled the risk, and people with a severe hearing impairment were five times more likely to develop dementia.

The good news is that hearing aids don’t have to be burdensome, and in just the past few years, the technology has advanced to the point where today’s options are sleeker, more discreet, and provide much better filtering of unwanted background noises.

Newer models can also allow direct wireless streaming from mobile devices, televisions and small microphones.

While modern hearing aids can run over $3,000 per ear (even with insurance), it’s important to remember that they can be a crucial investment for your long-term health. The research clearly shows that the earlier you or a loved one sees a hearing specialist, the far better the outcomes.

According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), financial fraud targeting seniors is a growing epidemic that costs older adults over $3 billion each year. As stunning as the figure is, it likely undercounts the total annual damage as seniors are less likely to report scams—either because they are unaware that they’ve been a victim or are too embarrassed to file a complaint.

Criminals will often gain their targets’ trust by reaching out directly via computer, phone or traditional mail. According to the FBI , the most common elder fraud schemes include:

Romance scam: Criminals pose as interested romantic partners on social media or dating websites to capitalize on their elderly victims’ desire to find companions.
Tech support scam: Criminals pose as technology support representatives and offer to fix non-existent computer issues. The scammers gain remote access to victims’ devices and sensitive information.
Grandparent scam: Criminals pose as a relative—usually a child or grandchild—claiming to be in immediate financial need.
Government impersonation scam: Criminals pose as government employees and threaten to arrest or prosecute victims unless they agree to provide funds or other payments.
Sweepstakes/charity/lottery scam: Criminals claim to work for legitimate charitable organizations to gain victims’ trust. Or they claim their targets have won a foreign lottery or sweepstake, which they can collect for a “fee.”
Home repair scam: Criminals appear in person and charge homeowners in advance for home improvement services that they never provide.
TV/radio scam: Criminals target potential victims using illegitimate advertisements about legitimate services, such as reverse mortgages or credit repair.
Family/caregiver scam: Relatives or acquaintances of the elderly victims take advantage of them or otherwise get their money.

All of the above methods require gaining the confidence of the victim, so the best defense is to recognize the warning signs as early as possible and to end the communication.

Seniors especially should resist the pressure to act quickly, as scammers can create a false sense of urgency to lure victims into immediate action.

Consumer Reports recommends following these 4 steps to avoid senior-related fraud:

If you receive a suspicious phone call or online inquiry, ask the representative for their full name, title and role within their claimed organization. Then, promptly end the conversation and contact the organization directly after looking up the business listing from a separate, trusted source.
Never give out any personally identifiable information or financial information (credit cards, bank account numbers, or checking accounts) to unverified sources.
Make sure that your computer, tablet and mobile devices are installed with up-to-date anti-virus and security software protection. Equally important is creating unique passwords, updating them frequently, and never clicking on a link, attachment or pop-up from an unknown source.
Immediately call the authorities if you think you have been scammed or if you feel there is real danger to you or a loved one.

Understanding Hydration: How to be Sure You’re Getting Enough Water

If you struggle with drinking enough water—or if you’re not sure whether your current intake is adequate—you’re certainly not alone as three out of four Americans are chronically dehydrated.

People experience thirst cues differently. A dry mouth and throat are token signs that our bodies are ready for a drink. But if you don’t regularly experience these sensations, your body may be sending out a hydration SOS in other ways.

Common symptoms of mild dehydration include headache, dizziness, brain fog, fatigue, and even mood shifts. When dehydration becomes more chronic, we may experience body aches, muscle weakness, skin issues and constipation.

Our bodies are 70% water so it’s crucial that we get enough. Water helps regulate blood pressure and body temperature. It promotes robust immune function, which helps us fight off illness. It even promotes cell and organ health, flushing out waste and aiding in the regeneration process that is critical for all systems in the body. Many medical practitioners believe that drinking water is our #1 most effective form of preventative health care.

So how do you know if you’re getting enough? While most physicians recommend 8-12 glasses a day, the “magic number” is different for everyone. The easiest way to determine your needs is to take a peek at your pee. A properly hydrated body usually produces pale yellow urine. If your urine is dark yellow, that’s a sign you probably need to increase your intake. If your urine is clear, you may consider cutting back, as too much water also isn’t ideal. Note that some medications may affect the color of your urine, so you may have to rely on more objective metrics, like aiming for those 8-12 daily glasses.

Not everyone loves the taste of water, but don’t worry: all liquids can stand in as hydration heroes! Herbal tea, soda, juice, and even coffee provide essential moisture. However, if the majority of your intake comes from non-water sources, consider aiming for a 50/50 ratio of half water and half other beverages.

Some folks need a more structured approach to hydration. It’s easy to forget to drink, especially if you’re not feeling a lot of thirst cues. Try keeping a reusable water bottle with you and aim to fill and finish it three times over the course of the day. Another easy hydration check-in is to have a glass of water when you wake up, with each meal and snack, and when you go to bed.

Why Getting Enough Sleep is More Important Than You Think

The inability to fall asleep or stay asleep is a burden that affects millions of Americans every year, with adults 65 and over especially at risk. Besides the obvious influence on a person’s quality of life, inadequate sleep can also lead to serious health conditions.

“Insomnia is more common for seniors, partly because of health issues, partly because of the anxiety and the concerns of aging, and sometimes because of medication,” says Dr. Jack Gardner , a neurologist at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center.

The optimum amount of sleep for each person varies, but in general, all adults should aim to get between seven and nine hours of rest a night.

The consequences of chronic sleep loss are profound and can include memory loss, mood changes, weakened immunity, diabetes, high blood pressure, weight gain, fatigue, heart disease and poor balance.

Sleep “quality” is just as important as duration, with the two primary sleep stages being non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM). The NREM stages can range from light to deep sleep, while REM is the most active stage when we experience dreaming. Healthy individuals will typically cycle between these two main sleep stages about every 90 minutes.

Building a healthy sleep routine is therefore crucial, and according to the Mayo Clinic , the following 6 steps can lead to significantly improved outcomes:

Stick to a sleep schedule: Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Being consistent reinforces your body’s sleep-wake cycle.
Pay attention to what you eat and drink: Don’t go to bed hungry and stuffed. In particular, avoid heavy or large meals within a couple hours of bedtime.

Senior Friendly Yoga Tips, All from the Comfort of Your Chair

When most of us think of yoga, we think of young, thin, physically fit people sweating and stretching and twisting their bodies into seemingly impossible shapes. Unfortunately, this narrow image excludes the majority of the population, and makes yoga feel impossible to most people—particularly older adults.

However, if we look more closely at yoga’s core principles, we can understand how to integrate these values into a more accessible practice. The physical benefits of yoga come from guiding the body through its full potential range of motion. The mental benefits come from cultivating mindfulness by focusing on physical sensations. There are so many ways we can achieve these benefits—even from our chairs!

Here’s a five-minute chair yoga practice that is suitable for beginning and seasoned yogis alike:

Start sitting tall with your hands in your lap. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Feel your belly move as you breathe. Feel the air come in and out of your nose. Do this for a few breath cycles.

Next, take a deep breath in and reach your arms up towards the sky. Breathe out and bring your arms down by your sides. Repeat this five times, allowing your body to expand a bit more with each repetition.

Now try a side stretch to open up your ribs and help you breathe more deeply. Reach your right arm up and over to the left. Take a few breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Next, lace your fingers behind your head. Breathe in, look up, and let your chest expand. As you breathe out, round your back and fold forward as much as is comfortable, noticing the back of your body open. Repeat this five times.

Here are two poses that are great for digestion. If it’s accessible to your body, draw your right knee into your chest. Hold it for a few breaths, then switch sides. Then twist by taking your right hand to your left knee and turning to the left. Maybe even look over your left shoulder. Notice where you feel the twist in your body. Take a few big breaths before you try the other side.

When you’re done, place a pillow (or three!) on your thighs and fold forward, letting your torso rest on the pillow. Make sure your head is supported so your neck can relax.

Finally, sit up and return your hands to your lap. Play with turning your palms down or up. Notice the different sensations when you change your hand position. For some folks, palms down can feel more grounding, and palms up can feel more expansive. Choose whichever feels best and sit for a few moments, feeling your breath move in and out of your nose. Get curious about any shift the practice may have caused in your body or mind. How do you feel now, as compared with five minutes ago? Again, there are no wrong answers—it’s all about mindful observing.

Easy Breezy Breathing for Strong, Healthy Lungs

Whatever you’re doing, pause. Take a deep breath in through your nose, counting to 4. Hold it for 4, feeling your lungs expand, then let it out slowly through pursed lips for 8. Do that a few times. When you're done, close your eyes and check in with yourself.

How do you feel?

If you notice a shift in your body, your mind, or both, that's great! You've just experienced the benefits of mindful breathing. Science has shown us over and over how even the simplest breathwork is incredibly effective in reducing stress and anxiety, lowering heart rate and blood pressure, and contributing to overall well-being.

But in the midst of a pandemic that affects the respiratory system, scientists are looking even more closely at how mindful breathing can strengthen and sustain lung health. According to the American Lung Association, breathing practices that increase lung capacity, reduce the number of breaths taken, and keep airways open longer are effective ways to increase oxygen levels and make your lungs more efficient.

Increased oxygen levels improve stamina and brain function, which allows us to be more physically and mentally active. Improved lung efficiency reduces the number of muscles required for breathing, reducing tension in the neck and shoulders. Additionally, any breathwork that involves lengthening the exhalation activates the parasympathetic nervous system, or the rest and digest response, which helps us feel relaxed and safe.

Studies have also shown that stronger lungs can both protect us from contracting respiratory illnesses, and can help us recover faster if we do get sick. Exercises that increase aerobic activity, such as walking or biking, are particularly effective at clearing stale air (including any pollutants or microbes) from the lungs.

But fear not - you don't need to run a marathon to reap these benefits! Mindful breathing is accessible to anyone, anytime, anywhere. Here’s another exercise to try called Belly Breathing. Put one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. Feel those places expand as you inhale and relax as you exhale. Invite your belly to expand a bit more with each breath in. Imagine the air traveling all the way down to your pelvis, or even down to your feet. Try 5-10 rounds of Belly Breathing, and then take a moment to notice how you feel.

Introducing simple exercises, such as the two described here, into your daily routine is an accessible way to experience the transformative power of breathwork. Start with just a few mindful breaths once or twice a day and work your way up. Your body, your mind, and especially your lungs will thank you!

The research found that friendships become increasingly important to one’s happiness and health across the lifespan, and in older adults, friendships are actually a stronger predictor of health and happiness than relationships with family members.

“Summaries of these studies show that friendships predict day-to-day happiness more and ultimately how long we’ll live, more so than spousal and family relationships,” Chopik explained.

However, seniors often struggle to maintain these kinds of meaningful relationships for a variety of reasons. Giving up driving, friends moving or passing away, and new health problems are some of the most frequently cited causes.

Chestnut Square Welcomes Murray and Kathy Rosenblatt

Now celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary, Murray and Kathy Rosenblatt are an optimistic couple that love to spread joy wherever they happen to be.

“If you want to get an idea of just how much we like to laugh, we once threw a Bar Mitzvah party for our dog,” says Kathy. “Our family was there and we took lots of photos so we could share them with friends who wouldn’t have believed it otherwise!”

The Rosenblatts first met during the Korean War while each was serving in the military. Murray was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, and just a few miles away, Kathy was working for the Navy as a secretary. The two eventually crossed paths and haven’t left each other’s side since.

“After the war, we got married and moved to New York where I managed my family’s jewelry store for over 30 years, and Kathy worked for the Probation Department,” Murray recalls. “After we both retired, we wanted to be closer to our daughter and grandchildren, and that’s when we moved to downtown Chicago in 1999.”

Giving back to others has been another staple of the Rosenblatt’s marriage, and for many years the couple ran a summer camp for children with special needs. Murray has also volunteered at Misericordia and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he would read to patients and steal a smile from everyone he visited.

The world has changed a lot since our last newsletter, but even during these unprecedented times, we are inspired each day by the cooperation, kindness and good humor displayed throughout our entire community.

As we continue to provide our residents and clients with exceptional service, many families, friends and local businesses have treated our staff to carryout meals from local restaurants, and we’ve also received donations of cloth masks, cleaning supplies, flowers, inspirational cards and more.

Maintaining everyone’s safety is always our top priority, but we have also implemented many new ways to stay connected with our residents to maintain emotional, physical and spiritual well-being.

Regular phone calls are being made to "visit" and share laughs; hardcopy and web-based resources are being distributed for recreational, fitness and religious content; breakfast, lunch and dinner service is being safely delivered to every apartment ledge; and special community-wide activities are being held such as door decorating contests (with prizes!) and a virtual scavenger hunt where residents call their floor neighbors to discover fun and interesting secrets about one another.

“Every single person at Chestnut Square is taking such great care of us [during the COVID-19 safety protocols],” said resident Elizabeth Alitto. “The food has been truly wonderful and we really feel pampered. I also love how we can order items from nearby stores and the staff will purchase it for us and add the charges to our monthly statement. We couldn’t ask to be in a better place, especially right now.”

The heartbeat of our mission has always been the shared sense of community between staff, residents, clients and families—and the past few months have only reinforced that fact. We are all in this together!

Passover/Easter Message from President & CEO Sunny Lopez

Dear Chestnut Square Residents, Families and Staff,

As we prepare to celebrate Passover, Holy Week and Easter, we will hear the story of a liberating God who acted in history to lead the Hebrew people from bondage to freedom and we will hear the retelling of the story of God’s acting to bring new life out of death through the mystery of the resurrection. Perhaps these stories will come to us through live streamed versions on TV or computers. Maybe we will join with our communities of faith through ZOOM.

However we participate in these Holy Days, it will be different than we have ever experienced before. Most of us will be behind closed doors, separated from family and communities of faith, maintaining our distance from those we love when all we really want is to be together to break bread, to celebrate the rituals that bind us together and to embrace one another in love.

As our leaders remind us of Pearl Harbor and September 11th in speaking about the suffering still to come from the pandemic, we may feel fear rising in our hearts. In the Bible the phrase “fear not” is used at least 80 times. I can only imagine that this is the case because fear is a natural human reaction to suffering and uncertainty. Our ancestors were afraid before they got to the promised land. Jesus was afraid in the Garden of Gethsemane. And we may be afraid as we wonder what lies ahead.

In times like these, God reminds us that perfect love casts out all fear, binds us together in love, unites us in profound ways and infuses us with the gift of hope. Passover and Easter will be different this year. It will be different in our Chestnut Family and it will be different for family members and staff celebrating in our own homes. We may experience moments of fear and anxiety, but we will pull together in love even as we are forced to be apart.

We may remember traditions of the past and we are invited to create new traditions. We will be comforted by the stories of our ancestors and we will create new experiences and have new stories to tell next year and in the years ahead. We will feel the love of family and friends as we both send and receive it from the safety of our homes. We will stay home to save lives and we will be reminded that the love that casts out all fear is the same love that we can feel wherever we are and no matter how far apart we are.

In my family, we will log into ZOOM on Easter Sunday to raise our glasses in celebration of the Resurrection. We may wear our Easter hats (I will have to find one). We may sing (not sure who will participate). I am not sure what else is on the agenda for this new way of gathering. We are still in the planning stages. However long we are together in this new way and whatever else we do, I am certain we will offer a toast. We will raise our glasses in gratitude for our immediate family, our extended families (in particular, the Chestnut Family), our communities, our country and our world and we will remember that we are all in this together.

How will you celebrate Passover and Easter this year? What new traditions will you create this year? What new stories will you have to tell next year?

We are all in this together. My prayer is that as we move through this together, we will all be strengthened by the perfect love that casts out all fear and that we will feel that love wherever we are on Passover and Easter. My hope is that we will find new ways to celebrate our traditions and that we will all have new stories to tell when this is over and next year when we gather for a Chestnut Square Passover and Easter Sunday Brunch face-to-face with family and friends.

Until then, may we all “feel the love” and share the love from the safety of our homes—together—even when we are forced to be apart.

New Saltwater Aquarium a Giant Hit at Chestnut Square

Thanks to a generous donation from one of our residents, Chestnut Square at The Glen recently added a state-of-the-art 125 gallon saltwater aquarium in our Card & Game Room! Residents and staff alike have been raving about this beautiful addition to our senior living community.

“The space has already become a natural gathering spot for people to meet their neighbors and form new friendships …all while discovering something new in the aquarium each time they visit it,” said Renee Bellew, Director of Sales and Marketing. “We’re in the process of gradually introducing new fish species, and eventually the aquarium's population will grow to about 20.”

Megan Green, Director of Resident Services, points out another key feature of the aquarium. “The tank has a custom oversized magnifying glass built right into the wall that moves,” she explained. “This way, even our residents with poor eyesight can still enjoy all the exotic details and color. Everyone is having a lot of fun identifying the various species.”

We would also like to thank SHO TANK Aquariums and its owner, Steve Goldman, for their expert work during the installation, as well as their ongoing maintenance of the equipment. We can’t wait to see this habitat evolve in the coming months!

Chestnut Square Brothers Share a Remarkable Bond

For eight decades, brothers Don and Bob Klein have been a dynamic duo. Growing up on Chicago’s north side, they shared the same group of friends, and as adults, the two worked together at the same bank where Don served as president and Bob was vice president and treasurer.

It should come as no surprise, then, that they would eventually end up at the same senior living community. “Moving to Chestnut Square was one of the best decisions my wife and I ever made,” says Don. “Mary Jane and I were always telling Bob how much he would enjoy living here.”

When Bob’s wife, Shirley, passed away in 2013, he began touring different facilities and realized that Chestnut Square was the perfect fit for him as well. He moved in soon after.

Fellow residents quickly embraced the siblings and their unique personalities. As both brothers will point out, Don is the more social one and loves organizing clubs and activities—especially when sports are the focus. Some of the staff affectionately call him “The Commissioner,” and he has served as Chair of the community’s resident council.

Bob, on the other hand, is the more adventurous type. He has travelled all over the world exploring different cultures, and celebrated his 88th birthday by jumping out of an airplane. “I saw George Bush, Sr. skydiving on TV, so I thought, why couldn’t I?” explains Bob. “My granddaughter joined me on the jump and it was a real thrill!”

When asked to describe her husband and brother-in-law, Mary Jane perhaps said it best. “Don and Bob bring out the best in each other and everyone around them. I’ve never known two finer men.”

Meet Fina Liga: Retired Restaurateur & Chestnut Square Resident

Growing up in rural Sicily, Fina Manzella first met her husband, Antonio Liga, when they were children living in neighboring houses. After falling in love, getting married and starting a family, they followed Fina’s parents and siblings and moved to downstate Illinois.

The close-knit group shared a passion for authentic Italian cuisine and in 1964, Fina’s father and brothers opened Manzella’s Italian Patio Restaurant in Champaign, Illinois.

The restaurant was an instant hit with students and professors at the University of Illinois, and is still thriving today. “A few years after Manzella’s opened, my husband and I decided to start a second restaurant on our own in nearby Tuscola,” Fina explains. “We named it Liga’s Steak & Pasta House.”

Fina, Antonio and their 3 children took tremendous pride in Liga’s and were hands-on with every aspect of the business. “We’d wake up before dawn and usually worked 7 days a week, but it was a lot of fun,” recalls Fina. “We grew very close with our customers and the City of Tuscola even named a street after me!”

After selling Liga’s in 2004, Fina and Antonio enjoyed visiting their 10 grandchildren and vacationing abroad, especially in Italy.

When Antonio passed away in January 2015, Fina moved into an apartment complex in Glenview to be closer to family. “I didn’t like the building because it was so quiet and lonely. I wanted to be around other people so after a couple months, I began searching for a lively retirement community.”

Fina visited Chestnut Square at The Glen and immediately knew she had found the right place. In December 2015, she moved into her new 1-bedroom residence. “I’ve made so many new friends here,” Fina exclaims. “I love being busy every day and I never miss an exercise class…it keeps me young. Plus, now I can let someone else worry about dinner!”

Transforming Plastic Bags for the Homeless

The residents of Chestnut Square recently joined forces with New Life for Old Bags , a network of diverse groups that create sleeping mats for the homeless out of used plastic bags.

Jane Gudmundson, a Chestnut resident since 2006, first learned of the group at the North Branch Bible Church in Glenview. Inspired by the program, Jane decided to establish her own volunteer chapter at Chestnut Square with her fellow residents!

The process involves taking plastic grocery bags and converting them into yarn. Then, by using a large crochet hook, the sleeping mats are created and later distributed to area homeless shelters. The mats are waterproof and provide a welcome and much needed relief for the recipients, especially in harsh climates like Chicago.

A very special thank you to residents Jane Gudmundson, Gideon Falk and Arlene Newburn for their ongoing support and efforts in this terrific cause!

A Halloween Marked by Early Snow…and Amazing Costumes!

Chestnut Square would like to thank everyone who organized and attended this year’s Halloween Party! As the Chicago area was blanketed by a record snowfall, our residents, families, friends and staff celebrated in style next to the beautiful 1st floor fireplace.

We saw some extremely creative costumes this year, including (but not limited to): hula dancers, pirates, captains, hippies, snowmen, ghosts, giant cats, pumpkins, Frankenstein, a pair of nuns, Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate...and even Alice from The Brady Bunch.

Delicious Halloween-themed treats and spirits were served as everyone took turns showcasing their custom-made alter egos.

“Our residents often brag about how they feel years younger living at Chestnut Square,” said Megan Green, Director of Resident Services. “Every month, we plan an extensive calendar of programs and events that create opportunities for each person to pursue their interests while creating new, lasting friendships.”

A Common Cause in Support of Students in Need

During July and August, Chestnut Square participated in a “Back to School Drive” sponsored by ChildServ, an organization that helps Chicagoland’s at-risk children and their families build, achieve and sustain better lives.

“I was so inspired by our community’s response,” said Rev. Betty Jo (B.J.) Birkhahn-Rommelfanger, Chestnut Square’s chaplain. “Our residents and staff donated new backpacks and an assortment of school supplies for local students, kindergarten through 12th grade.”

School supplies are an expense that many families have difficulty affording, and this program ensures that children have the necessary tools to be successful in school and reach their potential.

“Each year, we invite our community, corporate and faith partners to work with us in this life giving program,” said Catherine Inserra, ChildServ’s manager of faith & community relations. “Thanks in part to organizations like Chestnut Square, we were able to supply 1,100 students in need!”
